It’s a historic weekend on the plains. Its been about four years since the Toomer’s Oaks were poisoned by Harvey Updyke and now the new oaks are finally planted.
Hundreds of Auburn fans braved the cold and early morning hours to witness the occasion. The oaks were hand picked from a South Carolina Nursery out of about 9,000 oaks.
Fans are asked not to roll them until the 2016 season. The new trees are going to grow in a very high tech environment. There are special cells under ground that keep the soil from compacting around the roots. University leaders say their roots will be able to grow better and the soil is also better conditioned.
And as these trees continue to grow, fans say so to will Auburn pride.
Morris Drinnenberg, from Auburn said, “Who gets up early in the morning to see a tree great planted? You don’t. You come to see a family member come home. And when you are near the trees it’s, our roots are here. And when you are near them it’s like you are part of the family.”
There’s also a third tree planted near the facilities building on campus in case something happens to the other two.
