From the West Alabama Newsroom– In less than two weeks tens of thousands of people are expected to start arriving in Selma to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Movement — but is the city ready to handle the crowd?
Large crowds and lots of traffic will have all hands on deck from the Selma Police Department — but Chief William Riley says his officers won’t have to tackle the crowds alone.
He says state, local and federal law enforcement agencies are sending in officers to help with crowd control and security.
“So we’re looking at a total effort of law enforcement, of the law enforcement community that’s coming in to assist us in this endeavor,” said Riley.
The city estimates as many as a hundred thousand people will attend the 50th celebration.
