City of Selma Gets Ready to Showcase its Rich History

From the West Alabama Newsroom– The city of Selma is getting ready to showcase its rich history to the world by commemorating two different events that happened a 100 years apart.

City officials unveiled the commemorative banner and theme for the 50th celebration at city hall Thursday. They also announced the launch of the city’s new 50th website — selma50iwasthere.com.
   
There was also a new Battle of Selma historical marker unveiled at the corner of Summerfield Road and Highland Avenue.

“I really feel good about it,” said Mayor George Evans. Its going to require a lot of work, a lot of people getting in place to do some things, parking and businesses hopefully being ready for them, and hospitality on behalf of our citizens.”

Events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Movement in Selma — crank up in about a week.

The 150th anniversary of the Battle of Selma is in April.
