Tammy Moseley is a former smoker who weighed 220 pounds. After realizing just how unhealthy she was, she decided to do something about it, start running. We first brought you her story in December and now we’re checking in with Mosley again to see how her marathon preps are coming.
Tammy Moseley won a contest last year and as a result, she was given a running coach, a training plan and new running shoes. She’s been sticking to a strict running schedule and she’s seeing results, just in time for the Montgomery Marathon.
“After this Saturday, this past Saturday I ran, I felt really good.”
It’s taken some time for Moseley to build up the endurance she has today. A former smoker, she quit cold turkey and decided to pick up running to get healthy. With the marathon around the corner, she is now running double digit miles.
“Anywhere from four on up,” she says. “The long runs range nine, 12, 15.”
It hasn’t all been smooth sailing however. Moseley has had deterrents. Her running partner had to drop out of the marathon due to personal reasons, so now Moseley runs alone. And she says other factors, like cold weather, have sometimes kept her from following with her training plan.
“I’m not a seasoned enough runner to, I guess, run in the cold temps as some do so I wait until it warms up a little bit.”
But she says when she feels like quitting on those long runs, she thinks about her parents. Her dad, who is still working to provide for his family and her mom, who survived a septic shock episode that nearly took her life two years ago.
“She went into rehab and wasn’t able to do anything for herself…walk, anything, and when she left, now she can. So a lot of times I think about that when I’m running.”
And the running isn’t just improving Moseley’s mental health, she’s lost 15 pounds in just two months.
“Just with the running and eating right.”
