The legal confusion over gay marriage in Alabama continues to grow murkier after a ruling yesterday by the Alabama Supreme Court.
Yesterday’s Alabama Supreme Court ruling orders the state’s probate judges to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. They made this ruling despite a federal judge saying the ban violates the U.S. Constitution.
This has created not only legal confusion, but also chaos for residents like Derrill James. He’s been waiting to wed his partner for 16 years. The vendors are booked and the date’s set, but now those plans are in limbo.
Derrill James said, “It’s very disheartening that the state that I was born in and I love dearly doesn’t feel the same way about me.”
Jay Wolf, Senior Pastor First Baptist Church said, “The court has had the courage to go against the grain of our culture. So I am so proud to be in Alabama.”
The U.S. Supreme Court is set to take up the issue of the constitutionality of gay marriage sometime this summer.
