The 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march may not be until this weekend but some visitors have already re-enacted the 54 mile walk.

Five members from an Atlanta-based non-profit outreach organization called the Power of Peace Project walked the historic trail this week.
The organization promotes a 40-day peace pledge in prisons and schools each year starting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.
The group walked 20 miles on both Sunday And Monday, then 14 miles yesterday.

“The toughest part was definitely the terrain and the weather,” said Christopher Vandevere. “It rained on us. There was mist, we had semi trucks coming past us spraying mist on us. There was actually a point where a dog came up behind us from the woods.”

“There were times where really, especially for older tough joins, every stop was painful,” said Kit Cummings. “And I thought about those beautiful freedom fighters and those marchers that were fighting for a cause.”
