From the West Alabama Newsroom–  There’s a noticeable increase in activity around Selma — and people are starting to pour into the city to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic Selma Voting Rights Movement.

City crews are working to get everything ready for what is expected to be one of the biggest weekends in Selma’s history. The event features scores of activities — highlighted by a visit from President Barack Obama on Saturday.

James Benderson is the Director of the Planning and Development Department for the city of Selma.

“Of course when a sitting president comes to town the White house and Secret Service and all the federal agencies, you know,  they put in their action plans so we just kind of assist where its needed,” said Benderson.

City leaders estimate as many as 100-thousand people to visit the city for the 50th celebration.
