Alabama Conference of Black Mayors Visits Lowndes County School

On Friday, the Alabama Conference of Black Mayors stopped in Lowndes County. Students at Central Elementary School in Mosses performed for them, then took a tour of the school.

The mayors are staying in Selma for the anniversary commemorations of Bloody Sunday this weekend, and they say they wanted to make sure they didn’t forget the role Lowndes County played in the civil rights movement.

“Twenty-two miles of the movement fifty years ago came through Lowndes County, and there’s a lot of history here in Lowndes County, because Lowndes County played a significant role in the movement,” said Walter Hill, the mayor of Mosses and president of the Alabama Conference of Black Mayors.

Hill says when the marchers came through Lowndes County in in 1965, there were no black mayors in the area. Today, there are five black mayors in Lowndes County. The Alabama Conference of Black Mayors has more than 40 members across the state.
