We are less than a week away from Montgomery’s first ever full marathon.
But there’s still a lot of work to be done to get ready.
Lots of people have been putting in the miles to run the full 26.2 this Saturday.
And with only a few days left, Greg Miles with Montgomery Multisport says he’s surprised to see more and more people want to get in on the action.
“People are still signing up, unbelieavalby for the marathon, people are still signing up. We can’t believe it. We expect that with the 5K, we expect that with the half, but to actually still have that going on in the full is rare. We’re happy, don’t get me wrong, but the preparations are coming together great,” said Miles.
There have been a lot of hours put into doubling the race from the half marathon the city held in the past.
And that’s included a look at the weather report.
With wet weather expected all week, officials might have to use a contingency plan for part of the route.
“Just in case we had two courses certified because this is a Boston qualifying event and a USATF state championship. So the two courses we’ve got are for the marathon, both certified. If things get a little bad during this week, that one more scenic portion in the first race might be a little muddy, so we may step to plan B,” said Miles.
The city has been working for months to pull off a race with thousands of people,
Special Projects Director Tom Pierce says he’s been meeting with almost everyone in the city.
“A lot of city departments involved in putting this race on from public safety, police department, fire department, street maintenance, traffic engineering, engineering department, special events department, sanitation department, there’s a lot of moving parts to this race,” said Pierce.
