Students from across the country are getting a once in a lifetime experience.

More than 70 students are retracing the steps of the foot soldiers in the Selma to Montgomery March.

The event started Saturday and the participants will walk about 10 miles each of the five days.

The National Park Service selected the students from more than 26 states.

They wrote essays about why they wanted to recreate history in the five day walking classroom event.

Taurean Merriwether, a Tuskegee University Student said, “I feel like I was a part of history, I feel like I am making history and I feel like I am walking in the exact same steps as the people who were making history 50 years ago.”

The marchers are sleeping at a base camp at the halfway-point at the Lowndes Interpretive Center.

They march the final leg to Montgomery on Wednesday.

This is the first time the National Park Service has done this.

It’s part of the 50th anniversary commemorations of the Selma to Montgomery March.
