Dr. Bernice King, the daughter of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke at the Alabama Capitol as part of the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery civil rights march.

King recited her father’s famous “How Long, Not Long” speech that he had delivered 50 years earlier, at the conclusion of the march in 1965.

After her speech, the daughter of then-Gov. George Wallace, Peggy Wallace Kennedy, spoke. Gov. Wallace had been a staunch segregationist and had avoided the 1965 rally at the foot of the Capitol. After both speeches, the women hugged, signaling a unity that didn’t exist 50 years ago.
