From the West Alabama Newsroom–  The Selma and Dallas County area is mourning the loss of long-time Selma parks and recreation department director — Coach Elton Reece.

Selma mayor George Evans says Reece worked in the city’s rec department for 24 years. He says Reece touched the lives of countless children over the years.

Reece had a stroke and died early Monday morning after becoming ill at his home Sunday night. He was 67.

John Parris was one of Reece’s closest friends. “I don’t know of anybody who didn’t like him. I don’t know of anybody who didn’t love him. We’re going to have trouble filling this void by Elton leaving us.”

Reece is survived by his wife, Joy — his daughter Lane — and his son Todd and his wife Kellie — and one granddaughter Ellie Grace.

Visitation will be Thursday at Elkdale Church from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM — followed by the funeral at 3 PM.
