Cahaba Center Hosts 36th Annual Special Olympics

From the West Alabama Newsroom–  The Cahaba Center for Mental Health hosts the 36th annual Special Olympics at Memorial Stadium in Selma.

More than one hundred special needs athletes took to the field to compete in nearly a dozen different track and field events.

People and groups from throughout the community came out to help with the event by volunteering.

Winesha Wilson was one of dozens of students from South Side High School who volunteered. “I believe that if you give back to the community that you can make society a better place,” she said.

John Solomon is with the Knights of Columbus. “We’ve always wanted to be of a help in the community,” he said. “This was an excellent way for us to get involved.”

Michael Leverette is with Alabama News Network. “I come to help, to support but I always walk away being helped and being shown that its just a blessing to be a part of this,” said Leverette.

Winners at the day’s competition move on to compete in the State Games in Troy — May 16th through 18th.
