The first charter schools in the state could be opening their doors as early as 2016. Each year there’s a limit of 10 start-up charter schools and one local city councilman is hoping Bullock County makes the cut.

Only on Alabama News Network, Union Springs Councilman Stan Cooks is explaining his plan to convert the old Merritt School into a Charter School.

It’s been closed for the past few years.  Cooks says the school would offer career-ready courses like drone and solar panel technology, foreign languages like Korean and Mandarin, and a recording studio program.

Stan Cooks, Union Springs City Council said, “For the people that think this is a long shot, you got to look at it like this. Our school systems all over the state they are doing the best they can but they are all sort of backed into a corner because they have to teach ‘the test’ and the children need something where they will be ready to work as soon as they graduate. And will our school that’s we are hoping they will be able to do.”

Cooks says he’s already been speaking with potential investors in the school and is moving forward with drumming up community support.
