We’re taking action tonight with a story you’ll only see here on Alabama News Network. One law enforcement agency in the River Region is taking to an app to help cut crime and help keep you safe. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is developing a new app on your phone to get notifications like accidents and crimes happening in the county — all of it right under your fingertips. There’s always the option to search for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office website on your desktop computer. But now, you’ll have another choice.
“It brings all the information right here to your phone,” Said Montgomery County Sheriff, Derrick Cunningham.
That information is coming from the “Montgomery Sheriff’s App.
” It’s been in development for weeks after teaming up with the agency’s IT engineer, Mike Adams. You can report suspicious activity…. “Say you’re walking down the street and you see something suspicious, you can contact us, you can do a secret witness line,” Said Adams showing our crews the app. You can check for sex offenders in your area.
“That brings up everyone in Montgomery as a registered sex offender. You can do that that fast,” Said Adams. You can also check if you have an arrest warrant, who’s in the Montgomery County Jail and a calendar of events. You can also receive emergency alerts.
“It’s great for us to be able to pass on information, especially if you have a road closed especially if you have a shooting whatever the case may be, we want to be able to get those alerts to you,” Said Cunningham.
He hopes having the app under the public’s fingertips will help the sheriff’s office receive more tips.
“A lot of things that happen that go un reported,” Said Montgomery County resident, Danise Nettles.
“So now, maybe more people will be more prone to when something is happening or is out of place and need the presence of the sheriff’s department. They’ll just go on the app and click them up!”
Sheriff Cunningham says the app will be available for Droid and Apple phones in about a month. The MCSO is testing it out until then. The app will be free to the public. And the app was also free to the sheriff’s office since they have an IT engineer on staff.
