From the West Alabama Newsroom–  A unique tradition in Selma known as the Walk to Calvary — pulls the Easter story out of the church building — and takes it into the street.

For the past 25 years — the biblical account of the arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ has come to life on the streets of Selma.

Gateway Baptist Church coordinates the Walk to Calvary reenactment each year.

“To show the real meaning of Easter, what God has done for mankind. He sent His Son not to live for man but to die for man,” said Gateway Church Pastor Rev. Robert Walker.

“So Jesus is taking on the sin of the world and He’s doing the will of His Father by going to the cross and we just want to show everybody what he did.”

Walker says the church is hosting a resurrection service at seven Easter Sunday morning at Bloch Park. He says everyone is invited to attend.
