In a state where football reigns, basketball often gets put on the back burner. But with the recent hiring of coach Avery Johnson, fans say it may be just thing Crimson Tide needs to be a contender on the court.
“I think it was a great hire, personally. It was time for Grant to get out. With us being such a big football state to amp up the basketball program is a good thing,” said Pervis Fleming.
With Auburn scoring coach Bruce Pearl, fans say it could help bring more competition to basketball within the state.
“They have a great football program and I think what they are trying to do is get their basketball program to the same level. Yes, making a big splash with head coaches Bruce Pearl and Avery Johnson. I think that will help out tremendously,” said Britton Harvest.
Fans tell us they hope Johnson’s unique background of playing and coaching in the NBA will give Alabama an edge, not just during the games, but recruiting the players.
“Anytime you bring on an ex-basketball coach from the NBA it’s going to bring the recruiting kids in. People are gonna want to play for him. So definitely bring the recruiting edge up a bit,” said J.P. Angell.
An edge that could help bring basketball to new heights in the state.
“I think he will bring in another class of athletes to Alabama. Alabama doesn’t always seem like they get the best for basketball, but they always get football athletes. So I think him coming will bring another name to Alabama… I’m hoping for it. Hope they get out of the NIT for a chance,” said Burele Freeman.
