State Health Department officials spent the morning screening Alabama State University students for tuberculosis.

You may remember in fall of 2013, a student came down with TB. It was treated, but has since relapsed.

The university directly contacted about 135 students who may have come in contact with the student with active TB. State officials say the test isn’t necessary for the entire student body.

Pam Barrett, State Dept. Of Public Health said, “Only people who were contacts to the individual that is sick. A lot of time there’s a lot of confusion between infection versus disease, someone who just has the infection can not spread the germ to anyone else, they are not sick. There chest x-ray is normal.”

Results should be back on Monday and students will be notified whether they tested positive or negative on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Students had until noon to be tested. If they couldn’t make it, contact the Montgomery Health Department at 334-293-6423
