Hillside Residents Protest Outside Troy City Hall

Residents of a Troy mobile home park being pushed out because of a road project and Publix grocery store stood their ground at city hall.Â
Â
Residents of the Hillside Mobile Home Park and the Southern Poverty Law Center protested outside of city hall and delivered a letter to the city council asking for the city to work with the residents and for help.Â
Â
As we’ve reported, a Publix will open right off US Highway 231 and George Wallace, the current home of park.Â
Â
The property owner has offered financial support to help residents move, but residents say not enough is being done.Â
Â
Â
Byron Dewayne Knox Jr., a 9-year resident Hillside Mobile Home Park said, “My mother is disabled. She lives on a fixed income. We are not the only ones with that problem, we have a lot of people that are elderly, a lot of youth out there that had they done this in an appropriate time we would not be standing in front of you all today. We are not opposed to anything that’s going on, we are just opposed to how we were handled.”
Â
Sam Brooke, Deputy Legal Director SPLC said, “We are asking that there be some sort of solution whether it comes from the city, whether it comes from Publix who’s model is invest in the community, or whether it comes from the landowner that’s not really our or the residents concerns. What the residents concern is, is that they number one have a voice in the process and number two that justice is served to them as well.”
Â
The mayor instructed representatives with the Southern Poverty Law Center to open up a dialogue with the property owner.Â
