Special Olympians Compete in Pike County

Today more than 70 special olympians were battling it out in Pike County.

Athletes from all over Pike County were in Troy University’s Sartain Hall for the qualifying games.

Anyone with an intellectual or physical disability nine years and older could compete.

Some of the different events were races, golf, and bean bag toss.

Meredith Welch, Head of Delegation Team Pike Co. Special Olympics said, “They are able to compete on a level playing field with everyone having the same abilities. So it gives them the opportunity to feel like a champion and not only just be a champion.”

This is a qualifier for the state’s Special Olympics which will be held at Troy University in May.
