Possible cuts in the state’s General Fund budget are leaving some circuit court clerks worried about the future.

Butler County Circuit Clerk Mattie Gomillion says the Alabama chief justice’s office informed her that if the proposed cuts happen, including furlough days, her department could see layoffs, cutting her staff almost in half.

She says the department has already seen several cuts in the past few years. Right now, she’s not sure how she’ll manage the department if the cuts come into fruition.

Lawmakers are hoping to reach a compromise on the General Fund budget. The governor’s office says the state is short $700 million dollars. By law, the budget has to be balanced, so unless more revenue is found, the cuts may be required.
