Lawmakers are seriously looking at gambling and a new lottery to help solve the state’s budget shortfall.

Something Governor Robert Bentley says is a terrible idea.

The governor’s plan to raise taxes, most notably the auto and cigarette taxes, hasn’t gained much traction in the state house.

Members have been debating a budget with no revenue increases and cuts to every agency for weeks now.

“I am surprised but hopefully the will change their mind. We’ll see what happens. Obviously I could not tolerate that. I would reject that and veto that. We’ll see what happens. WE have presented a very fair budget,” saod Governor Bentley.

Members of the business community, like Montgomery Chamber President Randy George, payed close attention to the governor’s remarks.

“We’ve got a lot of challenges in this state. If we don’t find a solution to the revenue set we’re going to have some serious problems and missing some mighty big opportunities,” said George.

As far as the different proposals, many still haven’t made up their mind about what’s best for the state. But George says they’re open to some of the ideas.

“The governor made it clear though that he was opposed to gambling but not opposed to the people making a decision on the lottery. I think the chamber could support that position as well. But certainly what everyone wants is a fair tax base,” said George.
