One South Alabama student receives national recognition for community service, helping the elderly and young students establish a very special relationship.
Samuel Sherling is a quiet, humble sixth grader at Fort Dale Academy. His actions spoke louder than words when he decided to do something involving his classmates. Sherling and his mother started by getting all 38 of his classmates involved. Calling it project Pen Pal. Writing letters to the elderly in the city of Greenville.
The program went so well that Sherling received the Prudential Spirit of Community Award as one of the top 100 youth volunteers from across the country.
Sherling went to Washington D.C. For the awards night. He also met Senator Jeff Secessions… Richard Shelby… And even Good Morning America Anchor Robin Roberts.
Sherling says he’s looking to make project pen pal a permanent community service project for the fifth graders at Fort Dale Academy.
