The battle to balance Alabama’s General Fund budget is taking aim at the state’s history. But would proposed cuts actually save any money?
A bill in the House of Representatives would combine the Alabama Historical Commission into both the Department of Archives and History and the state conservation department.
The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Mike Holmes (R-Wetumpka) says the consolidation, combined with turning over certain historical sites similar to Fort Toulouse in Wetumpka to local historical groups, would save the state more than a million dollars per year.
However, not everyone agrees that move would save money.
