From the West Alabama Newsroom–  Authorities in Dallas County are investigating a tragic train accident that claimed the life of a 9 year old boy in Plantersville.

The accident happened at around 9:30 Tuesday morning on the 9000 block of County Road 63.

Authorities say the tracks where the boy was hit — run right past the backyard of the home where he lived.

They say no fence separates the yard from the tracks — and the boy apparently wandered onto the tracks. They say the train operator saw the boy — but was unable to stop the train in time to prevent the tragedy.

“I can only imagine what the operator of the train was going through seeing that, knowing the weight and what he was driving,” said Grantham.  “He did all he could do to stop the train. Due to the weight of the train he was unable to stop.”

The accident remains under investigation by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
