Pop singer Robin Thicke held a concert at Garrett Coliseum Sunday night for thousands of Hyundai team members and supporters celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Montgomery assembly plant.
The plant opened on May 20, 2005, with a huge event that brought Hyundai executives from Korea and former President George H.W. Bush to Montgomery.
Since that time, Hyundai has produced thousands of vehicles. Currently, the plant produces the Sonata and Elantra models.
The $1.1 billion plant employs more than 2,000 people.
Some of those employees have been there since the beginning, like Ray Smitherman.
“When we first started out, we were able to make five or ten cars, and we thought that was great. Our next milestone was a thousand cars, and we were able to achieve that. And now we make 1,500 cars a day. So it’s come a long way,” Smitherman told Alabama News Network.
Hyundai is planning more events for anniversary day on Wednesday. Alabama News Network will have coverage.
