Union Springs city leaders are now involved in the controversy over confederate flags in a city owned cemetery.

A prominent attorney in Union Springs picked up the Confederate flags last week, saying he’s trying to demonstrate a symbol of unity. The flags were anonymously replaced and now the city’s saying they must be removed.
The mayor says the people responsible have until 6 p.m. Tuesday to pick them up, or city workers will remove them.

Saint T. Thomas, Union Springs Mayor said, “For a group to come in here overnight and we wake up in the morning and that’s down there, it’s not fair to us as a city of Union Springs. That cemetery belongs to the city the city Council has the authority to deal with that cemetery. And they need to come to us, so that we can all be on the same page and they can understand where we are coming from and we come together and make a decision and move forward.”

The group Defenders of the Confederate Cross has set up a facebook event called Flagging Union Springs. It says the Alabama Division will be hosting some sort of event next month in Union Springs, we contacted the group for comment but have yet to hear back.
