A string of shootings of police officers has claimed lives in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Houston, and Omaha. On Thursday, the City of Montgomery honored its own fallen officers.

Family members and friends of Montgomery police killed in the line of duty were there, along with police Chief Ernest Finley, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, and Attorney General Luther Strange.

They read each of the 26 names of Montgomery officers killed aloud, including David Lee Colley, who died in April in a car crash.

This is Chief Finley’s first memorial, and he says Colley’s loss is still fresh on his mind.

“It’s all about that healing process. You never forget it. It’s all about that celebration and getting with the families and friends and just celebrate their life, so that’s what this is about,” he said.

According to the group ‘officer memorial down, so far this year 47 officers have been killed in the line of duty nationwide.
