Confederate flags in a city-owned Union Springs cemetery have recently waved in the middle of controversy, but now they are back up after a peaceful conclusion.

Representatives from the local and national Sons of Confederate Veterans were in Union Springs Saturday to put up confederate flags.

This comes after someone put flags up anonymous and city leaders ordered them to be removed
But the Sons of Confederate Veterans group called the mayor and got permission to keep the flags up for a week.

Gary Carlyle, Commander Alabama Division Sons of Confederate Veterans said, “And in no way do we mean to intimidate or harm anybody else. But we will stand for our heritage whatever it takes. In this case, thank you for the mayor, thank you for the city of Union Springs because they honor heritage also.”

The mayor said the next time the council meets he hopes city leaders can write up rules and regulations regarding this matter and the city-owned cemetery to avoid issues in the future.
