From the West Alabama Newsroom– The last day of school for students in Perry County — signals big changes for the school district.

Both Albert Turner, Sr. and Uniontown Elementary Schools are being shut down.

Superintendent John Heard says next year all students will have to attend Francis Marion or RC Hatch. He says the move won’t affect student safety — or the quality of education students get.

“We’re going to provide protection. We’re going to keep students separated,” he said. “Those groups will be in different areas of the building. I assure the parents that we’re going to do everything we can to make sure their children are safe at school.”

Heard says the consolidation will save the school district more than $425,000 dollars a year.
