Greenville city leaders say teenagers who are out of school during the summer can sometimes turn to crime, which is why they’re doing something about it.

Employers are helping students get a job and make good use of their time.

Greenville city leaders say during the summer, there is an increase in crime and  a lot of it is connected to teens. So to help reduce crime, the city sets aside money in its annual budget to hire teens during the summer months.

“Jobs where they can work with our park and recreation department as concession workers or scorekeepers, or that type of thing. Some are working with our horticulture department, some work with our public works, some are just get to pick up paper and clean up,” Greenville human resources director Barbara Philpot told Alabama News Network.

City officials also say they believe more government programs need to be in place to put more teens to work.
