The City of Tuskegee is changing the way it deals with the immigrant community.
On Wednesday, Mayor Johnny Ford signed a resolution that provides protections to immigrants who deal with law enforcement officers.
The trust policy is in effect in about 250 cities nationwide. It means undocumented immigrants will be less likely to spend time in holding cells and be deported.
Ford says the city will continue to follow federal law, but he says he wants to make sure civil rights are protected.
Mayor Johnny Ford says the city worked with the alabama coalition for immigrant justice to craft the resolution, based on other cities with similar policies.
