Pike Road school officials unveiled a new mascot logo tonight during their school board meeting.

It’s one of the final steps before the school opens in August.

Parents are looking forward to sending their children to the new Pike Road school in the fall.

“I’m excited because of the hype that’s behind it and the people that are dedicated to work in the school system,’ says Taneka Mayes.

Although there’s excitement, there’s also high expectations for the school. Randall Mayes and his wife Taneka will be sending their 8-year-old daughter, currently enrolled in Halcyon Elementary, to Pike Road.

“She’s excited about that,” says Taneka. “She didn’t really enjoy MPS.”

“Our oldest started in private school and then she went to public,” says Randall. “To transition from public to Pike Road, we’re hoping that it’s challenging. That’s what we’re after because she’s very smart and we need her to be challenged.”

School Board President Ray Hawthorne says students from all over Montgomery have registered for Pike Road.

“We’ll have a bunch of different students from all parts of Montgomery. Some from public schools, we’ll have some from private schools, maybe some home schooled children as well.”

Children like Braiden Watkins, who’s leaving Bear Exploration Center in Montgomery to attend Pike Road. His dad tells us they’re looking forward to being in a new school. Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone says it’s the parents who are bringing everything together.

“I think that’s what’s going to make this a great school system, is that people from every corner of our community, we’re 16 miles wide and 10 miles deep and you’ve got people from every location who are engaged already in supporting this school system.”

Pike Road will open as a K-8 school. 900 students are expected to enroll. The school board has already hired many teachers and coaches for the school.
