It’s been more than a year since a Union Springs teen was found dead not far from his school.

Now in an Alabama News Network exclusive, his family is speaking out for the first time.

13-year-old Ka’shaad hurts was found dead on Valentine’s Day 2014. Police say it was a suicide. But, his family is having a hard time coming to grips with what happened.

As part of their healing process, the family set up a scholarship fund in Ka’shaad’s name. Teachers selected two eighth graders and one high schooler for scholarships this year.

Krystall Hurts, Ka’Shaad’s Mother said, “He loved to help people that was his main thing, and whatever he had, he didn’t care he would share it with people. And with the scholarship fund we want to help the next student, help the next student further their education to keep his name alive.”

The family hopes to grant more scholarships next year. If you would like to donate to the scholarship fund, you can mail checks made out to the Ka’shaad Hurts Foundation to: PO Box 23, Union Springs, AL 36089.
