“Tallassee Now” Barbecue Festival Kicks Off Downtown

The “Tallassee Now” festival is this weekend in downtown Tallassee. All day, people have been pouring into the city for the big barbecue competition.
There are about 15 different teams cooking up food in four categories. Those entries will be cooked overnight, then judged by a panel. However, you’ll get a chance to judge the winning entries for a special “People’s Choice” round.
It’s all happening on the green behind Tallassee City Hall. Other attractions, like a quilt show, 5K, and local venders are spread out around downtown.
“The main thing is you don’t ever know who you’re talking to, because a lot of times people just visit a place and they kind of say, I like this place, don’t you? I do, it’s kind of special. Before you know it, they’re back up here buying a house,” said Tallassee Mayor Bobby Payne.
