From the West Alabama Newsroom– The state’s looming budget crisis is raising some major concerns about the impact massive cutbacks could have on the criminal justice system.
Selma Police Chief William Riley says deep cuts to state agencies would send a ripple effect through law enforcement agencies around the state.
Riley says smaller communities rely heavily on state agencies to help investigate serious crimes — as well as officer involved incidents.
“It is extremely important to have an outside agency at times investigate certain police misconduct issues because you want to maintain the public trust,” said Riley.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson says the cuts will create a backlog in the courts.
