Governor Bentley signs Alabama Accountability Act

More money could soon be available for a school choice scholarship program that helps Alabama families pay for private school.
Gov. Robert Bentley on Tuesday signed changes to the Alabama Accountability Act into law.
The existing program gives state income tax credits to donors of organizations that grant scholarships. Changes to the program include raising the donation cap to $30 million from $25 million.
Updates to the Alabama Accountability Act also tighten the income requirements on new scholarship recipients and places new reporting requirements on the scholarship-granting organizations.
Proponents say the program is helping students in some of the state’s lowest performing schools afford better education options.
Opponents argue that many recipients never attended a failing school. (Copyright 2015 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.)
