Presidential Hopeful Rick Santorum Visits Montgomery

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum announced his bid for office back in May.
Since then he’s been making stops in places like Montgomery’s MMI Outdoor plant.
The company makes special pop up tents for the military and fire departments.
Â
“I try to, every town I get to meet with folks who do manufacturing assembly work and just get a sense, what sort of things can we do to help manufacturers be more competitive here,” said Santorum.
Â
The former senator ran for president back in 2012 and carried Alabama, but ultimately lost the nomination to Mitt Romney.Â
Â
He says he expects Alabama to be an important part of his run again.
Â
“We have a connection here in Alabama because of our success in the past. I feel like we have a great group of supporters who are very active. We have a very engaged campaign here already of volunteers so this is a state we expect to be very strong in and we’re going to work very hard in,” said Santorum.
Â
Besides his focus on manufacturing and trade, Santorum says there’s something else that sets him apart from other candidates.
Â
Unlike many Republicans, he believes in a higher minimum wage.
Â
“I’ve put forward an idea that we should increase the minimum wage 50 cents per year for three years. That would put it back to where it has historically been, minimum wage covering about 4 or 5 percent of wage earners in America,” said Santorum.
