MONTGOMERY, AL-
When it comes to fulfilling her dream of playing college basketball, 15-year-old Rhamsey Wyche will do anything to perfect her skill, even if it means hopping on a 12-hour flight from Japan to attend the Freda Freeman-Jackson basketball camp in Montgomery, Alabama.
“My mom searched and found it online, and I just started going to it,” said Rhamsey Wyche.
Wyche has attended the camp for six years in a row. “The coaches are pretty cool,” she said.
This is the 16th year for the Freda Freeman-Jackson camp at Alabama State University. “We’ve had some down years, but this year is one of the largest groups we’ve had,” said ASU women’s head basketball coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.
Freeman-Jackson’s camp focuses on fundamentals like dribbling, shooting free throws, and defense. “Just like in the pro’s, they can’t shoot free throws because they don’t spend the time on it. They like the luxury of the sport like shooting three’s and dunks, and that doesn’t cut it,” Freeman-Jackson said. “At my camp, I tell my coaches, lets focus on the fundamentals.”
“It’s important because I need to learn how to dribble because I don’t have a left hand yet,” said Wyche.
The four day camp was for girls ages 8-18 and wrapped up Thursday.
