It’s a story we’ve been covering for weeks, confederate flags in a Union Springs cemetery have waved in the middle of a heated debate, sparked when a local attorney removed them from a city cemetery.

And once again confederate flags were in a Union Springs cemetery.

The Alabama Flaggers out of Gadsden held a ceremony Saturday to honor buried confederate soldiers in response to a resident picking up Confederate Flags from the graves weeks ago.

This event is happening at a time when these flags are not just the waving in a debate in Union Springs but across the country. Mitt Romney tweeted it’s time to take down the Confederate flag that’s flying near the South Carolina Capitol, after the Charleston shooting suspect was seen displaying the flag.

Jay Tully, Event Speaker said, “The individual involved claimed the confederate flag and then basically promoted hate.” Justin Burton, Director Alabama Flaggers said, “The flag never stood for hate.” Tully said, “And I think he used the confederate flag for his own motives and that’s not something it stood for. And I think often it’s taken out of context. And a lot of people see things like that and that’s what they see when they look at a Confederate flag.”

Police say there were no problems at the event. They were on standby and had 20 officers from state county and local agencies.
