Prayer services are taking place all over the country in the wake of the tragedy in Charleston.

This evening a church in Prattville held a candlelit vigil in remembrance of the victims.

It was a very somber night tonight as people from all over Prattville gathered to reflect on the recent violence in Charleston. They had one message…to stop the hate.

Pastor Jeffery Webb called a last minute prayer gathering at the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Prattville Friday night. Heavy hearts gathered to pray for Charleston, South Carolina.

“Just like it can happen in South Carolina, it can happen in Prattville,” he said. “Just want to pray to God to come together in the spirit of unity and support of those victims.”

Prattville Mayor Bill Gillespie attended the vigil as well as several members of city government.

“One of my favorite little phrases out there is faith, family, and friends can get you through anything and I truly believe that and I just feel like this is the right thing to do,” Gillespie said.

After several prayers for peace and unity, candles were lit before the vigil moved outside. It was in the church parking lot, that balloons were released for the nine victims of the shooting. The church even released a black balloon for the suspect before praying for him.

12-year-old Elise May tells us she’s saddened by the violence.

“The only thing that we can do right now is pray because God is the only person who can fix things like this.”

South Carolina native Ester Clinton tells us the tragedy hits close to home.

“The reason why I wanted to come, I wanted to share. And I wanted my grandchildren to see that we all come together and we love God and because we love God, we’re not going to give up on mankind.”
