The Southern Poverty Law Center is calling for confederate flags to be removed from capitol grounds in all states, including Alabama.

But some say the flag can have its place, when displayed properly.

You might miss it, but Alabama has several confederate flags flying here on the grounds at a confederate memorial.

Some think this is appropriate, but others disagree.

It looks like South Carolina is listening to the SPLC and other groups calling for the confederate flag to be taken down on the state house grounds.

But Southern Poverty Law Center president Richard Cohen said that’s not the only state that needs a change.

We reached out but he was not available for comment, but he said in a Time magazine editorial that “To truly honor those who were slain, the Confederate flag in every state, in every form, must come down.”

But not everyone agrees, including Anne Tidmore at the First White House of the Confederacy.
They fly the first flag of the confederacy, one of many flags to represent the confederate states.

“The first confederate flag looked like the American flag in battle, it was hard to distinguish the two. So they took the battle flag that we’ve talked about and put it in the upper left hand corner, the canton, of the flag,” said Tidmore.

She says Alabama’s series of flags is appropriate because it’s a memorial to those who died in the war.

“After the war was over, many many cities all across the south and the north too, they erected monuments or memorials to the fallen, to the dead on both sides. In fact if you go to gettysburg along the way you’ll see a huge monument to the Alabama soldiers, Tennessee, Louisiana, all the states,” said Tidmore.
