From the West Alabama Newsroom– The extended period of extreme heat is starting to affect farmers and their crops.
Central west alabama is caught in the grip of a heatwave. The heat is starting to take a toll on some crops — and farmers who pick their crops by hand pick.
“Twelve or one o’clock, man you have to kind of stay out of it for a while, take breaks and stuff like that,” said Chilton County farmer, Randy Chandler of Billingsley.
“We’ll work outside in the morning, we’ll work inside when its too hot, said David Cribbs with Spencer Farm. “Then we’ll go right back outside whenever it cools down.
Health officials say its important for people to stay cool and hydrated during a heatwave.
