Senator Jeff Sessions made a trip to meet with some in Montgomery this morning.
The packed room had a lot of questions about what’s going on in the nation’s capitol, but the biggest topic today was same sex marriage.
Last week, the Supreme Court made a huge decision declaring same sex marriage legal in every state.
Even in Alabama, people immediately flocked to the probate judge’s office to celebrate and to marry under the new law.
Senator Jeff Sessions says justices are overstepping their bounds.
“It’s critical to me that the next president appoint judges who will enforce law as it is, not as they might wish it to be. They’re not to be activists, they’re to be neutral umpires who call the balls and strikes regardless of the outcome of the game,”said Sen. Sessions.
Some probate judges in Alabama, like Wes Allen in Pike County are refusing to issue any marriage licenses.
Chief Justice Roy Moore has already voiced his frustration with the ruling, saying it’s a state’s rights issue.
Senator Sessions agrees.
“I just thought that the creation of this marital right, it’s nowhere in the constitution. Marriage has always been decided by the states. The age of marriage was decided by the states, what a common law marriage is, decided by the states,”said Sessions.
Having Sessions in town drew a lot of people downtown.
Montgomery County Commission Chairman Elton Dean says that’s because he brings a unique perspective on the national news scene.
“He always has the largest crowd because he brings to the table news that we really need to hear that we don’t hear all the time. We read the US Today and the Advertiser and we see CNN but we never get it first hand like that,” said Dean.
Senator Sessions will be back in Washington next week when the session resumes.
The federal judge who originally overturned Alabama’s same sex marriage ban said today that the supreme court’s decision is in effect immediately.
She says any probate judge who issues marriage licenses must issue one to same sex couples.
