Patrols Focusing On DUI’s For Holiday Weekend

Flanked by a hearse, a wrecked car and a cemetary, law enforcement agencies came together with a serious message for Montgomery drivers.
“Don’t drink and drive,” said Daryl Bailey, Montgomery District Attorney.
Â
But it’s not just the district attorney who wants you to think twice this weekend.Â
Katrinka McCrory and her husband Robert lost their son to a drunk driver 8 years ago.
Â
Their son was an officer with the Montgomery Police. Even though time has passed, the McCrory’s still think of him every day.Â
Â
“A tv program, a blue light.Just anything brings tears,” said Katrinka McCrory.
Â
“When we hear someone is killed in a drunk driving crash it just brings back memories and we just know the affect it’s going to have on their families and all involved,” said Robert McCrory.
Â
Troopers, police and sheriff’s deputies will increase patrols for the holiday weekend. Over the fourth of july holiday last year, there were over 200 drunk driver related crashes, killing a total of 10 people.Â
Â
District Attorney Daryl Bailey says the numbers haven’t improved over the years.
Â
“The numbers have been stagnant and that’s not good because the numbers are not good. We can always do better. We can always make those numbers go down and it takes each person being proactive and doing their part. Even if you’re not the one drinking, be sure that those who are drinking have a designated driver,” said Bailey.Â
Â
The McCrory’s hope that even though people have heard the message before, they’ll listen this time around .
Â
“I know we can preach it and we can tell it. You can see policemen speak and tell what they’ll do. IT goes in one ear and out the other. But it’s not, it’s not a joke. They will prosecute you, it will cost you money,” said Katrinka.
