From the West Alabama Newsroom–   A lot of people will be celebrating the upcoming Fourth of July holiday on the water this weekend. And that’s why the US Army Corps of Engineers is offering a few safety tips to try and keep people safe.

Corps officials say the Fourth of July holiday is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year on Alabama’s rivers and waterways. But they say staying safe on the water is as simple as following six simple rules.

      1)  Make sure navigation lights work properly.
      2)  Wear a life jacket.
      3)  Wear an emergency kill switch.
      4)  Swim in designated areas and always swim with a buddy.
      5)  Watch your speed and keep a sharp lookout.
      6)  Alcohol and water — DON’T mix.

Corps officials say almost half of all boating accidents involve alcohol.
