Greenville’s Longest Serving Councilman Dies

Greenville City council is mourning the loss of its longest serving councilman. James Lewis died Sunday after his long battle with cancer. Councilmember James Lewis took office October 1, 1984. During his tenure he was dedicated and devoted to District 4 and the City of Greenville. Lewis spearheaded many projects including several Community Development Block Grants benefitting his district for storm drainage and housing rehabilitation. Education was also near and dear to his heart. He served as councilmember liaison for the Street and Sanitation Departments in his early years before being appointed to serve as liaison for the City‘s Public Safety Division over the Police and Fire Departments. He also served on the Water Works and Sewer Board, EMS Advisory Committee as well as in numerous other capacities. Lewis was a devoted member of his church, served as chairman of the board of stewards and chairman of the deacons at St. Paul Missionary Baptist. Lewis died of cancer after battling the disease for a number of years.
