Montgomery citywide election’s are next month with several candidates vying for the mayor’s office.
But Political analyst steve flowers says it may be tough to overcome an incumbent.
“Every indication in this race would favor the incumbent Todd Strange for several reasons. He is a well known incumbent, so he has voters who are going to show up. In a splintered race where you have 5 or 6 candidates, those races become splintered. So his people show up, which accentuates his vote,” said Flowers.
Flowers also says having so many candidates to split the remaining votes plays to the incumbent’s advantage as well.
But he says there may be some surprises.
“The one who may surprise you may be the one named Dan Harris, who is a councilman commissioner. He has a proven voting record and a proven voting block of voters. That usually helps because if you have a large number of friends and neighbors, you add those up and it may add up to a vote that may put you in the runoff,” said Flowers.
In the end, it all depends on voter turnout.
Flowers says traditionally municipal summer elections don’t draw too many voters.
“Who shows up is what counts. I mean, the whole population may say they don’t like this person. But unless they get to the polls, their vote doesn’t count,” said Flowers.
The municipal elections are August 25th.
