The Alexander City airport is getting some major upgrades.

Grants from the federal government and the Alabama Department of Transportation are helping fund an extension of the taxiway. Airport officials say that will make it easier and safer for planes to take off and land. The project will cost about $1 million, but the city only has to pay about $50,000 of that.

The airport sees about 300 flights a month, and a lot of that traffic is driven by Lake Martin.  City officials say it is an investment that will pay off long-term.

“Some of these older planes may not have a radio and may not see you coming, so you can land on top of each other. It’ll improve safety quite a bit,” said Bob Condon, who flies through the airport regularly.

Airport officials say you won’t be able to tell much difference from the outside, except the gate that surrounds the airport will be closer to the road. There’s no timeline for when the project could be completed, pending approval from state agencies.
