For fans who remember Ken “The Snake” Stabler, the news of his death brings up old memories.

“My dad was a big Alabama fan, and he used to go to all the games. He called me last night and was real upset about it because he was at the game when Ken Stabler ran around the end to beat Auburn 7-3, just great memories,” said Scott Girlie.

Fans who watched him play say “The Snake” was who everyone wanted to see on the field.

“Back then, Bear Bryant rotated quarterbacks in and out a lot. It was just a ‘oooh’ when they’d take Stabler out and but a cheer when he went back in.”

Although some may not know Stabler, they are learning his name and about the legacy he will leave.

“One of the greatest quarterbacks that ever lived. Not only through college, but NFL as well.”

While the Alabama football team has enjoyed success over the years, fans aren’t sure there will ever be one truly like Stabler.

“We’ve got some great quarterbacks that have come through Alabama football, but ‘The Snake’, he was special in the way he performed every Saturday. It’d be hard to say we’ll see anything like ‘The Snake’ again,” said Mark Dempsey.
